About MEKALUMI

Engineering education for every child, in every language, everywhere

MEKALUMI is an international, open educational project in development.

Mission

To give every child the chance to learn engineering, create virtual devices and experiment — no matter where they live, how much their family earns or whether they have access to expensive equipment.

Principles

  • Free to learn

Learning should not depend on a family’s income.

  • Open

Open development, open formats, open to contributions.

  • Offline-friendly

Designed for places where internet access is slow, expensive or missing.

  • Modest devices

Designed for low-cost phones, not only for powerful computers.

  • Every language

Built for many languages and scripts from the start.

  • Honest

Clear about what works today, what is planned and what a simulation cannot show.

  • Private by default

No accounts, ads or trackers on this website.

  • Learning by doing

    Experiments first; explanations follow.

How MEKALUMI is built

Interactive lab
A 2D/3D environment where devices are built from virtual parts.
Engineering simulations
Calculations for eight areas of engineering, run locally on the device.
Lessons
Lessons for all eight areas, created and checked locally.
Creator Studio
A tool for teachers to create lessons. It is still evolving.
.mekapack
A file format for packaging and sharing lessons.
Android
A version for Android phones, tested on an emulator with 2 GB of memory.
This website
A static, light website without trackers, prepared for many languages.

Current limitations

  • MEKALUMI has not been publicly released yet.
  • The Android version has not yet been confirmed on a real phone with 2 GB of memory.
  • Creator Studio is still evolving.
  • Simulations are simplified models of reality.
  • Translations on this website are drafts until native speakers review them.
  • The licence model is not final.

Roadmap

Plans, not promises: the order and the timing may change.

  1. Now

    • Stabilise the lab and the lessons
    • Test on real low-memory Android phones
    • Prepare lesson packs for release
  2. Next

    • Public release
    • Publish the lesson catalog
    • Open contribution channels
    • Finalise the licences
  3. Later

    • Community translations and local lesson libraries
    • Lessons from teachers around the world
    • Reviewed translations in many more languages
