Open project
Built in the open, for everyone
MEKALUMI is developed as an open educational project. Openness lets teachers, schools and communities trust it, adapt it and keep it alive.
Why open?
-
Trust
Anyone will be able to see how lessons and simulations are made.
-
Adaptation
Teachers will be able to adapt lessons to their curriculum, their language and local examples.
-
Longevity
An open project can outlive any single company or funder.
-
Shared progress
A lesson made in one country can help children in many others.
Teachers as authors
Teachers will create lessons in Creator Studio and share them as .mekapack files. A good lesson should be able to travel from one classroom to another.
Why open standards matter
When the lesson format is openly documented, other tools can read and create lessons too. Teachers’ work does not get locked inside one program.
Proposing lesson packs
A clear and friendly process for authors to propose lesson packs is planned:
-
The engineering content is checked.
-
The lesson is tested in the lab.
-
The author is credited by name, if they wish.
How the community will work
Planned roles:
-
Maintainers
Keep the core lab stable, safe and fast.
-
Educators
Design, test and review lessons.
-
Translators
Bring the lab and its lessons into more languages.
-
Reviewers
Check that the engineering is correct.
A code of conduct will keep the community welcoming and safe, especially because children are involved.
Planned, not final
Licensing
The licence model has not been finally decided. The preliminary choice is MPL-2.0 for the source code and CC BY 4.0 for the educational content. Nothing on this page is a final legal decision.
The use of the MEKALUMI name and logo will be defined separately.
